Potato Truth: Curious Thoughts On Cleaner Eating

🥔 Potato Truth: Fries, Chips, Cost, Nutrition, and Why Whole Potatoes Hit Different

Hello friends!
I’ve been doing a lot of weighing, measuring, and comparing lately, and something as simple as a potato really caught my attention this week.

I picked up one of my russets — a nice hand-sized potato — and it weighed about 8.5–9.5 ounces. And I asked myself:

If I turn this one potato into fries or chips… how does it really compare to the store versions we all buy?

I assumed it would be similar. Potato is potato, right?

Absolutely not.
The difference is honestly shocking, so I wanted to share it — because this kind of information helps me stay mindful, and I know it helps many of you too.

And I pulled these numbers with the help of ChatGPT just to make sure everything I shared here was accurate — because y’all know I like things to be right!

🥔 First: What’s Really Inside a Potato? (The Vitamin + Mineral Facts)

Before we go any further, I want to make one quick, important note:

⚠️ The label saying “1 potato = 1 serving” is VERY misleading. Please weigh your potato.

The nutrition label is based on a true medium potato, which weighs 5.2 ounces (148g) and equals 110 calories.

But the potatoes most of us buy — the ones I weighed at 8.5–9.5 oz — are actually 1.5 to almost 2 servings, NOT one.

This means that the “110 calorie potato” we see on the bag is usually closer to:

  • 185–220 calories

  • 44–48g carbs

  • ~5g fiber

  • ~1,050 mg potassium

  • ~45% Vitamin C

Nothing wrong with that — they’re great nutrients — but weighing gives you the true picture, not the “label version.”

Now, here’s what’s actually in a potato.

🥔 Whole Potato Nutrition (Per Medium 5.2 oz Potato, 110 Calories)

Vitamins & Minerals

  • Potassium: 620 mg

  • Vitamin C: 27% DV

  • Vitamin B6: 10% DV

  • Folate: 6% DV

  • Iron: 2–4% DV

  • Magnesium: 6% DV

  • Sodium: 0–10 mg

Macros

  • Carbs: 26g

  • Fiber: 3g

  • Protein: 3g

  • Fat: 0g

Now let’s scale that to the potato I weighed — around 9 ounces, about 1.7× larger.

🥔 Your 9 oz Potato (Raw, Before Cooking)

  • Calories: ~185–200

  • Carbs: 44–48g

  • Fiber: ~5g

  • Protein: ~5–6g

  • Fat: 0g

  • Potassium: ~1,050 mg

  • Vitamin C: ~45% DV

  • Vitamin B6: ~17% DV

  • Iron: 4–7% DV

  • Magnesium: ~10% DV

  • Sodium: nearly none

Potatoes are NOT “empty carbs.”
They’re actually packed with real nutrition.

💵 Price Checks: Whole vs Processed

Whole russet potato (9 oz):

$0.40–$0.55

Frozen fries (equal 9 oz portion):

$1.00–$1.40

Store-bought chips (7.5 oz bag):

$3.00–$5.00

Whole potatoes win every time — in nutrition and price.

🍟 Real Potato (Air-Fried) vs Frozen Fries (Air-Fried)

To keep this fair, I compared:

One 9 oz raw potato
vs
9 oz of frozen fries (weighed BEFORE cooking)

🍟 Real Potato (Air-Fried)

  • ~200 calories

  • 44–48g carbs

  • ~5g fiber

  • 5–6g protein

  • 0–3g fat

  • 1,050 mg potassium

  • 45% DV Vitamin C

  • Sodium: only what YOU add

  • Ingredients: 1 (potato)

🍟 Frozen Fries (Air-Fried)

  • 360–480 calories

  • 17–25g fat

  • 50–60g carbs

  • 3–4g fiber

  • 4–5g protein

  • 300–600 mg sodium

  • Very low vitamins

  • Ingredients: potatoes, oils, salt, dextrose, preservatives

Even the “healthier” brands are pre-fried before you ever touch them.

Fries: Side-by-Side Comparison

Real fries fill you. Frozen fries keep you reaching back for more.

🥔 Homemade Potato Chips vs Store Potato Chips

Now let’s compare chips — using that same 9 oz potato.

🥔 Your Homemade Potato Chips

(Peanut Oil Frying)

Potato chips absorb 10–15% of their weight in oil.

So your chips come out to:

Nutrition for the whole batch

  • Calories: 414–561

  • Fat: 26–39g

  • Carbs: 44–48g

  • Fiber: ~5g

  • Protein: 5–6g

  • Potassium: still moderate-high

  • Vitamin C & B6: still present

  • Sodium: whatever YOU add

Ingredients:
potato + oil + salt

And because it’s real food?
It fills you better.

🧂 Store-Bought Potato Chips (7.5 oz bag)

  • 1,150–1,200 calories

  • 78g fat

  • 112g carbs

  • 1,000–1,500 mg sodium

  • Very low potassium

  • Almost no vitamins

  • Long ingredient lists (additives, oils, preservatives, sugars)

These are engineered for “eat more,” not satisfaction.

💛 The Big Picture: Same Potato, Totally Different Food

✔ Whole potatoes are cheaper.

✔ Whole potatoes keep their vitamins.

✔ Whole potatoes have more potassium and Vitamin C.

✔ Whole potatoes digest slower.

✔ Whole potatoes fill you more.

✔ Whole potatoes satisfy faster.

Frozen fries and bagged chips?
Higher calories, more fat, more sodium, fewer nutrients, and engineered to keep you grabbing for more.

Your body knows the difference.

🥄 Bariatric Note + Final Word on Good Carbs

Even though potatoes are carbs, they are good carbs — especially when eaten:

  • in portion

  • cooked simply

  • as whole food

  • not as heavily processed snacks

Real potatoes offer:

  • fiber

  • vitamins

  • minerals

  • potassium

  • slower digestion

  • and steady energy

✔ Whole-food carbs can absolutely fit into a healthy daily lifestyle.

✔ It’s the portion that matters — not the potato.

When you choose whole food over processed, even a few bites go further and feel better.

💛 Thank You

If you made it all the way through this potato deep dive, thank you.
I share things like this because they help me stay mindful and balanced on my own journey, and it means the world that you’re here learning right alongside me.

Thank you for the constant support, the encouragement, and the love you always pour back my way. I’m truly grateful for this community and the way we lift each other up — one day, one choice, and sometimes one potato at a time.

Much love,
Louise

Chili Cheese Fries WW blue 10

Menu: Chili Cheese Fries    (ww blue - 10 ) (please remember you can reduce points)

The Players:

1 Medium Potato with Skin (ww blue 5 points)

1 cup of Turkey Chili ( I used Hormel Turkey Chili (ww blue 4 points ) you could have also used a 1/2                                     cup for 3  because it was really filling and satisfying)

                                    - next time to reduce points I will make my own 0 point chili - which I will share                                      with you in a few more posts)

1/8 of a cup of Velvetta Shreds (ww blue 1 point)

Diced Onion (ww blue -0)

The Game:

*Take the potato and cut it thin, with skin on, into long strips, like fries. Put into a baggie. Spray with a bit of non-stick spray and season. Shake up in bag coating everything.

*Spray your Air Fryer and drop in fries and set 400 for 15 minutes and shake half way.

* Remove fries and Place in a heat safe container. I use a mini meatloaf pan, that I lined with foil so that I could lift them out and put on my plate. you could also take foil and make a nest out of it, bit enough to hold the fries and the stuff you are going to put on top.

*Fries first, then layer on chili, and the cheese. Pop back into air fryer for about 5 minutes to warm up the chili and melt the cheese.

* Pull out ( I pulled up my foil and layed in my dish) at this point put your toppings on. I used diced raw onion.

You could put queso, jalapenos, sour cream

Any way you like to eat this, This was so filling and so yummy. You could also pre prep these and just heat and eat they would hold up really well.

I took a picture with my hand so you can see how much it made.

This was a great lunch idea, and like I mentioned could be a premeal for a weekly idea.
If you give this a try, let me know.

WW Blue Notes
This was a really satisfying meal. I could have even cut back on the chili and it still would have been plenty. The choice of the potato was a personal preference for cleaner, healthier options, but the fast fries are the same points and would have been yummy too. So you do you.

Living your best life and doing what feels good for you is the secret.
Keep it simple, Stay well and safe.

Let's Talk WW for week 4/23/2021

Let's Talk WW week ending 4/23

I have been hanging on the edge on whether or not I wanted to invest in time to do a blog on this WW journey that I am on the path of. I will have to go back and fill you in on about me, and how I got to this journey, which I will as I evolve this blog a little more each day.

I at the moment probably have no followers or even any one to support me, on this blog. If by chance you run across me, stay a bit, you are more than welcome to even hang out.

I have periodically checked out other WW blogs, and even WW you tubers. They are all cool and they seem to be doing well. I do notice that some of them are doing really well. I just want you to know, I have over 150 to 200 lbs to loose. I am 60 and I have no metablolism, so really I am a mess to start with. I did not pursue the you tube, cause who wants to see a 150lb over weight old woman trying to help you see the light.

So I chose the blog to help you see a little light. I really just wanted a platform to share the recipes and the food choices that I use to follow my journey. To try to hold me accountable, and just something to keep my mind off of eating the next bag of chips. I am on the WW blue and many days, I am just that WW blue (sad)I have although lost 50 lbs over the last year. It is such a slow process, and yes I have heard, long as it took to put on there it will take to take it off.".

I am going to come here every monday, and just do a Let's talk WW for the week . Gives me a platform to tell you what I am learning, doing, not doing, and you can share back with me.

So this week I wanted to touch on the subject of the Potato.

I am trying to eat more natural and healthier options of food and do the WW. Now don't get me wrong fast frozen fries and quick and yummy, especially in the air fryer. You get like 22 of them for 5 points and that is pretty good, makes like a nice handful. Especially since I am finding out that most of WW range for points is usually a very nice portion and that is it. Portions is such a key role in all of this. I will come back to this subject in another post soon.

So in exchange for the fast frozen fries I seem to gyrate to the medium potatoe (skin and all) I slice them thinly like fries, toss them in a bag with a squirt of pam spray, and season. Then lay in airfryer (yep, you can do these in there too, just a few more minutes) or you can bake. 400 for 15 min and toss in between.

They turn out just so good and to me I think more filling, maybe it is the skin that makes them feel that way.

Here is a nutritional breakdown from the WW app for the fast frozen fries and the medium potatoe

This is the fast fries

this is the medium potatoe

Breakdown
The calories are about the same. The fat is considerably lower. Carbohydrates were higher in the potato but the fiber was higher, lower sodium and more protein.
To me this is a better bet, the potato, nothing added to it, it comes like it is grown. I did season it, so the sodium may have been higher.

Notes:
I was much more fuller on the potato than the fast fries. I was also more sleepier, with the fast fries as my choice. The potato didn't hit me so hard in the sleepy part.
Too much carbs makes me sleepy. I guess it is a curse, kinda an inside body alarm. Leads me away from high carbs if I want to stay alert and ready to go.

I am hoping that I may have shared something interesting or atleast let you see what I have been figuring out. I love when people share ideas and thoughts, that is what makes us a growing human being.
I am here for the Journey of getting and living my best life.
What is your call? What is your path?

*Thoughts for next week
Goals
>Try to atleast be active 15 minutes twice a day. For a good three days next week. Will update that.
>Try to drink atleast 64 oz of actual water. I am thinking that I am going to have to not drink, yes, not even my coffee until I hit a 1st marker of water, 32 oz. I am going to give it a good try.

Do you have anything to try next week?

Well it sure has been nice to sit a minute and unload all this information. I have a million things in my head and I have to share, or they just make me crazy.

If you like my blog, or maybe want to be a part of some thing new, drop in. I am actually thinking about doing my own domain if I can get this to work. So lets see what happens. I know there is some way to subscribe so please do, if not book mark me and check back.

I am getting ready to post about the Chili Cheese Fries I made today for lunch. Don't miss it.

Until we talk again.
Live your best life, change starts with you.
