I was on a mission to find the meat. The place online that sold the meat were very expensive. One day I happened upon the Daphne's Beef and Lamb Gyro slices. I am thinking it was about 13.00 when I last bought this. No matter I still would have got it. The meat is really good. However I did decide that it needed a little more flavor and I bought some cavendars greek seasoning and that was nice to make the flavor pop, with the cold creamy taziki. We have tried doing a thin cut pieces of chicken and season with the greek seasoning and it was just as good. Alton Brown also has a recipe for a decent gyro loaf, if you have a hankering to make your own.
The same for the tzatziki sauce, I just bought the one at Aldi's and it was pretty decent. The others I have tried were too lemony. I usually will make my own. It is very easy also.
For the flat bread, I have actually seen Mediterranean bread at the Publix, but it was really bready. Pita is also a good substitute. Just warm them up. For us I did the two-ingredient dough recipe and fried them in a pan and they were really killer.
So enough and I will get right to it.
Gyros At Home
Needed:
Gyro meat (Costco makes a really tasty one, I in this picture put it on my pizzazz and it kind a grilled it, you can do in a pan and I have even added 1/2 cup of water and put in the crockpot. )
Greek Seasoning (the meat is seasoned but this gives it more of a kick)
Lettuce/onion/tomato/cucumber
Tzatziki Sauce (Aldi's makes a nice one, but there are lots of ways to make it from scratch)
Flat bread (you can buy this or a pita or you can make the two ingredient dough - and make it flat and brown in a pan w/olive oil) (will post that recipe next)
Then assemble.
A smear of tzatziki/meat/lettuce/tomato (slice and cut in half) onion(do the same) and cucumber slice.
Fold and enjoy. You can make
*Estimated 20.00 and you could make 8 large gyros.
That to me is a great bargain, and it really was worth the time. You can prep the veggies, and put the meat in the crockpot and all you have to do is warm the flat bread of your choice. I don't fry my dough bread until the last minute, we appreciate it warm and yummy.
So if you try this or have any questions always feel free to holler.
